Chronic venous diseases are a common condition, most commonly recognized as Varicose veins. Basic underlying problem is incompetence of venous valves. Varicose veins are but one symptom of venous disease. Other symptoms may include the so called “spider veins” in early stages and leg swelling, blackish discoloration of the feet and legs, and frank ulceration in late stages.
These so called venous ulcers can be very painful, refractory and recurrent. Even in the absence of wounds, venous disease can result in pain, aching, itching, cramps, burning sensation, pins and needle sensation in the legs.
Chronic venous disease management involves wearing elastic compression stockings and other interventional treatments including endovenous laser therapy, microphlebectomy, foam sclerotherapy etc.
A lot of the times, when venous ulcer is present, multiple issues may be present including venous reflux at multiple levels including superficial, deep and perforating veins or a combination of reflux and obstruction. Obstruction in the veins may be a result of previous blood clots in the veins or extrinsic compression etc. These issues may need to be addressed by catheter directed thrombolysis or endovenous stenting.
